Fairground Carousel Back to top
The carousel has an extraordinary history, dating back to the fifth century AD. The word ‘carousel’ originated during the Crusades, taken from either the Italian garosello and / or the Spanish carosella, both of which mean ‘little war.’

The beautiful working carousel at Yesterday's World was originally built for Webbs as a 3-abreast Galloper by Savages in April 1898.

Its next owner was Colonel John Print of Commercial Road, London, who acquired the ride in 1911. Colonel Print had several gallopers and in 1936 acquired the 89-key Marenghi organ for his machine. It is likely that during the war the Gallopers were packed away. They were sold in 1948 to Charles Thurston for his amusements on the pier at Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex.

The ride was still in the undercover section of the pier in 1996, owned by the Walton Pier Company, but so extensively rebuilt as to give few clues to its origins.  In 2006 it was purchased by Yesterday’s World and has since undergone extensive refurbishment to bring it to the impeccable condition that you see today.
