With the industrial revolution came a host of labour saving gadgets such as mincers, orange rind shredders, egg whisks, scales and copper skimmers. All of these, and more, are on display at Yesterday's World where two kitchen hands can be seen working in a splendid example of a Victorian kitchen.

There were no washing machines or tumble dryers in the Victorian laundry. The next stage
on from washing at the river bank was using the dolly peg and tub. A mangle would be used
to squeeze the excess water out of garments that would then be put out to dry. Surprisingly
the first electric iron was used in the 1880s and irons would often have a 'Dally' bell that would
stop ringing when a house maid became lazy and wasn't continuing her ironing.

The ironmonger held a vast range of goods for the householder, the tradesmen, and, in country areas, the farmer. Larger establishments often had their own foundry which carried out repair works as well as manufacturing their own pieces. The blue glass globes known as 'Hardens Star' hanging in the centre of the store are rare examples of fire grenades which were thrown into flames to extinguish the fire.
